The 2 1/4" measurement is the width of the paper roll — 2.25 inches, or about 57mm. That's the dimension that has to fit your terminal's paper slot. The length of the roll (50 feet, 85 feet) determines how often you'll swap rolls, and the core and outer diameter determine whether the roll physically seats in the machine.

When in doubt, stick with the 50' size or confirm the maximum diameter your device accepts.
