2 1/4" Paper Rolls
Jul 5th 2026
If your payment terminal takes a 2 1/4" roll, you're using the smallest — and one of the most common — receipt sizes in the country. It's the standard for credit card terminals and mobile printers, and while it looks simple, ordering the right roll means matching more than just the width. This guide covers everything.
What Does "2 1/4 Inch" Mean for Receipt Paper?
The 2 1/4" measurement is the width of the paper roll — 2.25 inches, or about 57mm. That's the dimension that has to fit your terminal's paper slot. The length of the roll (50 feet, 85 feet) determines how often you'll swap rolls, and the core and outer diameter determine whether the roll physically seats in the machine.
Which Terminals Use 2 1/4" Thermal Paper?
Almost every countertop and handheld credit card terminal uses 2 1/4" thermal rolls, along with most Bluetooth and mobile receipt printers. Common models include:
- Verifone Vx520, Vx570, and many Engage models
- Ingenico iCT220 and iCT250
- Clover Mini and Clover Flex
- Square Terminal
- PAX A920 and S80
- Most mobile and Bluetooth printers (Zebra ZQ series, Bixolon SPP, Star SM series)
If you're not sure, measure your current roll across the face, or check the printer manual before ordering.
2 1/4" Roll Lengths Compared
The 2 1/4" width comes in a couple of standard lengths. Here's how they stack up:
| Size | Approx. Receipts Per Roll* | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 1/4" x 50' | ~150 receipts | Standard terminals, low-to-medium volume | Most common size |
| 2 1/4" x 85' | ~255 receipts | Busier counters, fewer change-outs | Check your terminal fits the larger diameter |
*Based on a roughly 4-inch receipt. Actual counts vary with receipt length.
Don't Forget the Core Size
Length isn't the only fit factor. 2 1/4" terminal rolls typically use a small core (commonly 7/16"), and some terminals limit the maximum roll diameter. An 85' roll is physically larger than a 50' roll — if your terminal has a tight paper compartment, the longer roll may not close. When in doubt, stick with the 50' size or confirm the maximum diameter your device accepts.
Standard vs. BPA-Free and Phenol-Free
Standard thermal paper uses bisphenol-A (BPA) in its coating. For staff who handle receipts all day — or for operations in states tightening chemical rules — we stock alternatives:
- BPA-free thermal paper uses color formers without BPA
- Phenol-free goes further, removing BPA, BPS, and the whole phenol class
How Many Rolls Per Case?
2 1/4" rolls are sold by the case — commonly 50 or 72 rolls per case depending on length. Buying by the case drops your per-roll cost significantly and qualifies for free shipping on most orders through Paper Roll Products.
Not the Same as 2 5/16" or 3 1/8"
Two easy mix-ups: gas pump dispensers use 2 5/16" outdoor-rated rolls (wider, and a different animal entirely), and full-size POS printers use 3 1/8". If you run both a register and a card terminal, you'll likely need two different sizes. See our 3 1/8" thermal paper guide for the larger size.
