Gas Station Pump Paper — Why Outdoor-Rated Matters

Gas Station Pump Paper — Why Outdoor-Rated Matters

Aug 4th 2025

Gas station operators face a paper challenge that most other businesses don't: their receipt printers live outside, exposed to direct sunlight, temperature swings from -20°F to 120°F, rain, humidity, and fuel vapors — every single day. Standard office thermal paper was never designed for these conditions.

What Happens When You Use the Wrong Paper at the Pump

Standard thermal paper's heat-sensitive coating is highly reactive to UV light and temperature extremes. At an outdoor fuel dispenser:

  • UV exposure causes the coating to darken, producing faded or illegible receipts
  • High summer temperatures can cause the paper to pre-react, turning the roll dark before it's even used
  • Temperature cycling causes the paper to become brittle, leading to jams and tears
  • Humidity causes the rolls to swell, making them difficult to feed through the dispenser mechanism

What Makes Outdoor-Rated Pump Paper Different

Outdoor-rated fuel dispenser paper is formulated with a UV-stabilized, weather-resistant thermal coating that resists UV-induced fading, maintains consistent performance across wide temperature ranges, withstands humidity without swelling or degrading, and produces high-contrast, legible print even in bright outdoor conditions.

Parking operations use both UV-stable outdoor ticket stock and standard indoor thermal. See our parking operations supply page for the full breakdown.

The Right Size for Fuel Dispensers

All major fuel dispensers use the same 2 5/16" width — a size not used in any other POS application — but the roll length and core size vary by manufacturer, so you have to match both. Gilbarco and Tokheim use 209' rolls on a 1/2" core, while Dresser Wayne uses a longer 400' roll on an 11/16" core. Longer rolls reduce service frequency; pump paper changes require a technician or manager to access the dispenser cabinet, which takes the pump offline temporarily. Both 48gsm and 55gsm are available — we recommend 55gsm for its added thickness and better resistance to outdoor moisture.

Dresser Wayne Ovation / Helix / Nucleus: 2 5/16" × 400', 11/16" core

Gilbarco Encore 500 / Passport: 2 5/16" × 209', 1/2" core

Tokheim Quantium 310 / 410: 2 5/16" × 209', 1/2" core

Verifone Ruby2 / Ruby CI (indoor): 3 1/8" × 200'–273'

Indoor C-Store POS Is Different

Your indoor convenience store POS systems — Verifone Ruby, Topaz, C18, and standard Epson or Star receipt printers — use standard 3 1/8" thermal paper. These are not exposed to outdoor conditions and don't require outdoor-rated paper. Order them separately from your pump paper.

Keep Backup Rolls on Hand

Keep 2–4 backup rolls per active pump on hand. Running out during a busy period means either taking the pump offline or sending customers away without receipts. Longer rolls (like the 400' Wayne size) mean fewer changes — but when you do need one, you need it immediately.
